Vibration and Wind

Tuned mass damper
An integrated project team can tackle complex structural challenges with the necessary tools, data, and perspectives to deliver effective and comprehensive solutions.

DeSimone provides in-situ vibration monitoring to measure and analyze wind, equipment, and human-induced vibrations to detect subtle changes that may indicate early signs of wear, imbalance, misalignment, and systems degradation. Sensors collect data on site, in real time, and over time. The data is collected and then the movement is modeled so that it can be studied and, if necessary, possible solutions can be implemented in the model before being built in reality.

We have used this highly versatile diagnostic approach to analyze the wind-induced vibrations of supertalls in New York City’s “Billionaire’s Row,” as well as the even more subtle footfalls on floors and observation decks.

In-situ monitoring allows for the evaluation of a building without impacting its operation. Our clients can make smart, data-informed decisions about their property or proposed project.

Our analysis includes vibration prediction through advanced Finite Element Modeling (FEM), which is a sophisticated computational method for dissecting complex structural components into smaller, interconnected “finite elements.” A detailed, virtual simulation predicts each element’s behavior under different conditions, including vibration acceleration, velocity, and displacement. When viewed as a whole, your structure is more accurately understood as an interdependent system capable of complex responses to various stresses and environmental factors, including forces like severe wind, earthquakes, and heavy loads.

DeSimone’s vibration analysts specialize in the detection and correction of building imbalances. Our vibration measurement can encompass a short-term understanding of your structure’s dynamic properties, or it can provide insight into impacts over longer periods of time. For example, an accumulative approach results in a more accurate understanding of how building motion corresponds with wind speed and direction.

Whatever the threat, our objective is always to return your building to a balanced state with minimal disruptions to operations. Whole solutions are achieved by working closely with the client, architect, and the rest of the project team to identify strategies for dissipating the energy behind building movement. Effective vibration control involves identifying sources, establishing safe limits, and implementing engineering solutions to protect or reinforce structural integrity.

We design supplemental damping systems and structural modifications to ensure building occupant comfort and reduce structural fatigue. This service is particularly applicable for structures that are tall and slender. Our practice is known for innovative design solutions for tuned mass damping, tuned liquid sloshing, visco-elastic linked beams, and chain dampers.

When needed, our in-house experts in Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD) can further reduce the amplitude and frequency of building movements resulting from high winds or seismic activity. DeSimone’s ongoing innovations in the design and implementation of damping systems are sustained through our deep skill set in this area.

Our vibration analysis and mitigation projects have included buildings in variety of sectors, including high-rise commercial projects, industrial facilities, arts and culture, healthcare, and life sciences.

About us

In an industry in which consolidation has become the norm, DeSimone stands apart from large engineering practices. The diversification of our services enables us to support a global clientele experiencing complex challenges. We remain independent so that we are able to provide bespoke and personal solutions, wherever your vision takes you.

Structural engineering is where we began, and it is still the core of our practice. But through the years, we have expanded the services we offer our clients, from façade and building envelope to vertical transportation to steel detailing and fabrication-ready modeling to advisory services.
