Structural Detailing

Our structural detailing team provides accurate, detailed plans that translate design intent with ease of fabrication, erection and installation in mind.

With origins dating back to 1970 (and joining DeSimone in 2023), our structural detailers started on drafting tables, moved to computer aided drafting in 1981, and became the first North America user of Tekla Structures 3D modeling software in 1995.

Working to both imperial and metric standards, all work complies with AISC and CISC requirements and staff consult closely with clients to ensure that standards are adhered to.

Our IT-enabled global production operation enables us to rapidly deploy production resources on projects, ensuring that even the most demanding construction schedules are met. With our center of detailing operations and management offices in North America and Chile, supported by internally owned offshore production offices in India and the Philippines, our detailing team operates as a true 24-hour-a-day, around-the-clock operation. Our approach is unique in that all our resources are 100% company-owned, giving us full control over processes, priorities, and overall execution, rather than relying on subconsultant partnerships.

Our customers get the best of both worlds: A local North American company, with the global advantage of time compression and blended costs. With over 200 staff members in five offices engaged in structural detailing, resources can be drawn on as needed to meet project deadlines. We maintain a comprehensive experience database for each resource that enables us to assign teams that can be onboarded quickly and effectively to client standards, workflows, and nuances. Our integrated technology platform supports cloud-based model sharing and real-time collaboration, enabling all offices to work together seamlessly as one cohesive global operation.

In addition, the integration of Structural Engineering and Structural Detailing services on our steel projects enables DeSimone to deliver true Fabrication-Ready Modeling. By developing an LOD 400 model during the design phase, we allow the project team to initiate steel fabrication earlier—often shaving months off the construction schedule—while significantly enhancing the accuracy and reliability of the model. This is achieved through real-time coordination between our engineers and in-house detailers while the project is still in design.

When developing an LOD 400 Fabrication-Ready model, we verify precise steelwork locations, required clearances, weld types and preparations, and material thicknesses. Unlike LOD 200 or 300 models, an LOD 400 model can be used directly for fabrication and the generation of highly accurate erection plans. The result is a detailed and dependable representation of all fabrication and installation requirements—streamlining RFI resolution, reducing coordination challenges, and creating a more efficient overall process.

About us

In an industry in which consolidation has become the norm, DeSimone stands apart from large engineering practices. The diversification of our services enables us to support a global clientele experiencing complex challenges. We remain independent so that we are able to provide bespoke and personal solutions, wherever your vision takes you.

Structural engineering is where we began, and it is still the core of our practice. But through the years, we have expanded the services we offer our clients, from façade and building envelope to vertical transportation to steel detailing and fabrication-ready modeling to advisory services.
