The design of the Texas Rangers’ new home ballpark faced two key challenges: climate conditions prone to high temperatures and frequent rains—which led to lower attendance compared to other ballparks—and the need for flexibility to accommodate an expanded variety of enhanced amenity spaces. Construction began in 2017 with an aggressive completion target of Spring 2020.

The DeSimone team provided 3D modeling and detailing for the steel portions of the stadium. Holding frequent on-site coordination and BIM meetings, and expediting steel fabrication through highly accurate modeling, proved critical to meeting the fast-track completion date.

Our detailing work included the steel elements and support for the stadium’s 19,000-ton retractable roof, which at 240,000 SF (22,296 SM) is the largest single-panel, operable roof in the world. Hovering some 278 feet above the diamond, the roof resolved the core challenges by providing fans with a climate-controlled environment and a shield from extreme heat and rain to prevent game delays. The new stadium offers luxury suites, retail, restaurants, offices, and underground parking—all within an impressive architectural form.

The Covid-19 pandemic delayed the 2020 MLB regular season and the official opening of the stadium until late July. Globe Life Rield served as a neutral site for the 2020 MLB post-season and host to the 2020 World Series.
