Hallmark Distribution Center Expansion

© Brandon Stengel

The distribution hub for Kansas-based conglomerate, Hallmark, widely known as the world’s largest greeting card manufacturer, fills and ships orders worldwide through its Liberty Distribution Center in Missouri.

To expand the center’s footprint and centralize operations, the company made a strategic decision to augment vertical capacity within the 40-foot clear height of the existing facility with the addition of a new, 62,000 SF interior mezzanine. This sustainable solution increased its usable footprint by nearly 50% without requiring a larger physical building, reduced the use of cardboard boxes by 1 million annually—as well as transportation needs and associated carbon emissions.

Installation inside the facility was led by our Steel Frame Alliance (SFA) division while it remained in operation with minimal disruption, the steel and concrete-slab-on-deck interior mezzanine was fully supported by the low-rise building’s existing columns—minimizing impact to the main floor and maximizing usable space. Our team ensured the mezzanine was structurally supported, efficiently integrated into the main structure, and code compliant.

In collaboration with the Steel Frame Alliance, our team provided services for the full lifecycle of the project, including structural engineering, detailing, and steel procurement, and fabrication.

Structural steel erection began two weeks from the outset of design process, reducing the project schedule by six months and expediting delivery of an expanded, fully operational distribution center.
