Aston Martin Residences

This 66-story, 1.6M SF tower— Aston Martin’s first expansion into luxury residential development— was designed to impress. Rising to a height of 817 feet (249 meters), it includes 391 condominium units, a 552-car parking garage, and an assortment of amenities. Its striking curved silhouette, cantilevered pool deck, and rooftop helipad come together to create a distinctive icon on the Miami skyline. In large part, the architect’s visionary design drove DeSimone’s structural design approach. But its particular location—in a hurricane zone adjacent to a Miami River tributary—offered two distinct challenges faced by many tall buildings in Miami: high winds and soft soil.

For such a tall building, with a profile that could catch the wind like a sail, the building needed stronger-than-usual foundations. Our innovative solution—unique to the Florida market—consisted of a concrete mat supported by 573 auger cast concrete piles to anchor the building.

The building’s significant height, curved profile, and substantial cantilevers meant no two floors would be exactly alike, and a simple orthogonal assembly wouldn’t be feasible. Instead, our team devised a system of three structural cores with massive, sloped concrete columns that work together to deliver loads from the top floors to the narrow foundation, providing stiffness and preventing the building from twisting in strong winds.
