American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Design Awards | Architect Magazine Awards – Annual Design Review Award | Concrete Industry Board (CIB) Awards – Award of Merit

The David Zwirner contemporary art gallery celebrated its 20th anniversary as it inaugurated a new ground-up exhibition and project space in the Chelsea district of New York City.

The building design’s simplicity and monumentality mimics the disciplined forms of surrounding warehouse buildings, referencing the area’s former industrial heritage.

Our team utilized concrete for the interior and for a dramatic stairwell that connects all five floors and create the long spans needed to carve out the expansive main display space—a 64 by 68 foot (20 x 21 meter), 18 foot (5.5 meter) tall, column-free room topped by sawtooth skylights—occupying most of the ground level and used for large-scale installations.

The second floor is used as an intimate exhibition space, while art storage and handling areas, office space, and private viewing rooms occupy the upper floors. The L-shaped configuration allows almost all of the building to be illuminated by daylight, despite its midblock location with structures directly to the east and west.

The gallery became the first LEED commercial gallery certification in the US, achieving a LEED Gold rating in 2014. The design features environmentally conscious strategies such as habitable green roofs, high-efficiency mechanical and lighting systems, maximized daylighting, and responsibly sourced materials.
