The program includes translational research space, academic facilities for the Rutgers Medical School, and the New Jersey Innovation Hub. To support these highly specialized uses, we designed a steel structure with vibration-sensitive lab spaces, classrooms, and double-height multipurpose venues. Key elements include 300 dry labs, 900 wet labs, and a 400-person lecture space partially suspended by a 10-foot cantilevered slab extending over four levels.
One of the most significant challenges involved controlling vibration transmission across sensitive lab areas while maintaining long spans and open floor plans. Our in-depth vibration analysis ensured the building design met performance criteria without compromising flexibility.
The project is the first to receive New Jersey’s Aspire award, which supports development in underserved communities. In future phases, the campus will expand to include residential units, dining, retail, and space for industry partners such as Nokia Bell Labs—making Helix a keystone of New Jersey’s life sciences ecosystem.
