Albert Works

Preserving a piece of Sheffield’s industrial heritage, our vision for Albert Works focused on celebrating its history and breathing new life into the local area as the new home of Jaywing, a local digital marketing agency.
Set in the Cultural Industries Conservation Quarter of Sheffield, England, the revitalized building brings four disused offices and a derelict warehouse back into use—with some 54% of the existing structure retained to form the new workplace.

As structural engineers for the project, we carefully refurbished the original perimeter buildings with a new steel frame infill to replace the demolished north light warehouse, providing a double-height space and an integrated access core and walkway.
Replacing the old warehouse, we designed a new steel-frame structure designed to reflect the building’s original context.
To connect the different floors, we designed a raised walkway that winds through the office space such that it doesn’t impact the ground floor layout. To minimize the overall depth of the deck structure, we strategically employed channel sections.
Adopting traditional trades and materials retains the character of the original buildings. New construction elements include a bronze-finished aluminum façade that aligns with Sheffield’s industrial heritage.
