Arvon North Lumb Bank Writing House

Arvon North’s Lumb Bank Writing House, an 18th-century mill owner's house once the home of Poet Laureate Ted Hughes in the North of England, has been transformed as part of an ambitious redevelopment emphasizing inclusivity, with two historic buildings physically and operationally reimagined. Arvon offers writing courses and retreats at this renovated and revitalized site.

We prioritized reuse in our approach to this project, assigning a value to existing assets —aesthetic, carbon, heritage, or social— and adopting an approach that honors traditional design and construction methods.
Our engineers linked these two historic buildings together with a glass façade and mass timber structure, joining past and present together to create an accessible, unified, modern, and more sustainable building that retains original materials and respects its craftsmanship.
