Nestled next to High Line Park in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, 520 West 28th Street is a 12-story luxury condominium building with ground floor retail and below-grade parking. The 157,000 SF building was designed in concrete to support its curvilinear shapes and fluid patterns of internal spaces. The L-shaped structure houses luxury apartments and multi-level penthouses. Amenities include a robotic parking system, an IMAX theatre, swimming pool, a spa, fitness center, and a communal terrace.

Throughout the building, typical floorplates are split and offset by approximately half a floor height, requiring complex design and coordination of structure, mechanical systems, and architectural layouts.

The building’s structure is primarily conventional reinforced concrete, with foundations of spread footings supported on bedrock. Long balconies extending from the east side of the building proved structurally challenging. Post tensioned tendons were used to supplement the conventional concrete, affording a longer extension of the balconies while keeping the slabs thin to maintain harmony with the façade design.
