As structural engineer for the project—which includes a 35-story residential tower, a 13-story block-and-plank structure, and a 9-story infill building—DeSimone met its demanding engineering challenges head on, including the 70-foot-wide Sendero Plaza public courtyard elevated above a school gymnasium. We designed a structural system of 3-foot-deep steel beams spaced 8 feet on center, topped with composite decking and a concrete slab, which delivered the load-bearing performance needed for the heavily used plaza while providing a column-free volume for the gym.

Throughout the project, DeSimone worked closely with the design team to support Passive House performance, detailing for airtightness and minimizing thermal bridging across envelope transitions. We also specified a low-carbon concrete mix to reduce embodied emissions while maintaining durability.

With these engineering solutions, Sendero Verde transforms an entire city block into a resilient, transit-connected campus—one that combines energy-efficient housing, public green space, and essential services in a model of inclusive urban development.
