Building in Long Beach

Located in downtown Long Beach, just steps from the Convention Center, 180 East Ocean Boulevard recently underwent a full modernization of its vertical transportation systems, including seven elevators across the building’s office and garage levels.
As the elevator consultant for the upgrade, DeSimone provided comprehensive services including planning, specifications, RFP coordination, construction administration, and commissioning.

Aging elevator infrastructure from 1981 and rising traffic demands in this 12-story building posed significant challenges to efficiency and reliability. To streamline the flow of traffic, we converted four tower elevators from geared to gearless traction systems, implemented destination dispatching, replaced two garage elevators with machine-room-less (MRL) traction systems—replacing older hydraulic models—and modernized a back-of-house MRL elevator.
Another key challenge was the conversion of hydraulic elevators to traction MRLs within the constraints of the existing building envelope. We successfully navigated the spatial and structural limitations to implement the upgraded systems without major disruption.
The new gearless and MRL systems significantly reduced power consumption and long-term maintenance needs—resulting in a more efficient and resilient vertical transportation network.
