Winthrop Center Named Among ENR's Best New England Projects

The 53-story, 1.8M SF Winthrop Center in Boston has been recognized among ENR’s 2024 New England Best Projects, with structural design by DeSimone Consulting Engineering,

Featuring the world’s largest Passive House office space that also meets WELL Gold and LEED Platinum, Winthrop Center received an Award of Merit in the Office/Retail/Mixed-use category.

Developed by Millennium Partners and designed by Handel Architects, the building features a stunning, street level, three-story, through-block civic space, dubbed “The Connector,” and which includes a food hall, meeting rooms, and retail. This expansive public space through the building can host cultural events and connects to the surrounding Boston historic financial district and a series of public green spaces to foster a vibrant street life.

DeSimone’s structural team engineered a 10,000-ton “sky mat” system to resolve loads from the incongruous column grids for residential and office spaces—a first in Boston. A steel-framed deck just above The Connector, supported by mega-columns, serves as a platform to support the concrete tower above.
