Una Residences Selected as NCSEA Finalist

Una Residences, a spectacular, 47-story, waterfront residential tower with an innovative cantilever at the 15th floor in Miami, has been selected as Finalist in the NCSEA Structural Engineering Excellence Awards.

In designing the reinforced concrete structure, DeSimone’s structural engineers faced a number of challenges, including challenging subsurface conditions, a high water table, and the need to withstand high hurricane winds—as well as how to optimize a tight footprint to maximize the size of units on the tower’s desirable upper floors.

Our design solution features a creative, sophisticated system of reinforced concrete transfer elements and sloped columns, including a visually dramatic, load-bearing cantilever system, which rises gradually to become pronounced at the 15th floor, reaching a maximum projection of 33 feet at the 19th floor.  This solution achieved the goal of providing larger units with panoramic views across the upper levels. Overall, our team implemented a design for the structure that leverages outrigger trusses, walking columns, multiple cantilevers, a complex lateral system—and one of the deepest below-grade parking structures in South Florida.

Award winners will be announced at the awards gala on October 29.
