One Wall Street has won a Breakthrough Award for Innovation in Residential from the Commercial Observer. The largest historic office-to-residential conversion in New York City at 1.6M SF, the former bank building now has a new life as a residential tower.
The DeSimone structural team, led by Managing Principal Mark Plechaty, PE, and Associate Asim Khan, PE, created a six-floor overbuild that the existing structure could support by using Cobiax voided concrete slabs to reduce the weight of the additional materials. In order to include the long span spaces needed for high-end retailers and avoid drilling into the adjacent Wall Street MTA station, we designed an elegantly cantilevered glass addition—now serving as the entrance to Whole Foods—and removed the entire second floor and parts of the third floor of the structure, creating a double height retail space.
The project also included the removal of 34 existing commercial elevators and 16 escalators, and the relocation of an additional 25 new elevator shafts to meet the needs of residential use and effectively transport residents through the building.
Congratulations to our engineers and the full project team behind the iconic One Wall Street—including Macklowe Properties and SLCE Architects. Congratulations as well to the team behind Printemps for winning the award for Innovation in Retail.
