MSC Miami Cruise Terminal Wins ACEC Platinum Award

ACEC New York has honored the MSC Miami Cruise Terminal with an Engineering Excellence Platinum Award for Structural Systems! The 492,000 SF marine terminal, the largest in the world, has the capacity to berth three ships and welcome 36,000 passengers a day.

The creation of this complex, landmark facility involved the expertise and close collaboration of our exceptional structural engineering team and façade and building envelope experts, led by Managing Principal William O’Donnell, PE, FRSE, SI, Principals Danilo Nanni, PE, PSI, Ahmed Osman, PE, and Rok Lee, AIA, along with Associate Principal Benjamin Reich, AIA.

Supported with 6,000 tons of meticulously fabricated imported Italian steel, our structural design features a long-span, composite steel framing system that supports the terminal’s expansive public areas and sculptural roofline with resiliency to flooding and rising seas. Our façade team designed a system that incorporates three distinct custom wall assemblies, all independently tested to ensure the envelope can withstand hurricane winds and wind-borne debris.

With a design that features sloped exterior envelope walls and non-traditional support structures, our team’s contributions played a vital role in bringing this project to a successful completion.
