Along Manhattan’s Park Avenue, nine polychromatic aluminum and bronze sculptures created by artist Dorit Levinstein, in partnership with EDEN, House of Art, add a pop of color and touch of whimsy to one of NYC’s most renowned thoroughfares—with support from DeSimone.
Structural engineers Thomas DeSimone and Emily Rabinowitz, led by Managing Principal Mark Plechaty, PE, designed the aluminum bases and connections that secure and stabilize the sculptures so they remain standing in all weather conditions.
Titled “Whimsy in Motion,” and installed along the median intersections between 34th and 39th streets, the colorful sculptures seem to dynamically twirl and dance, drawing the attention of pedestrians and commuters alike.
Projects like these harken back to the core value expressed by our tagline—that our profession is a bridge between science and the humanities. With our tagline as our guide, DeSimone is committed to supporting cultural and charitable endeavors in and around New York and our global offices.
The colorful sculptures will grace Park Avenue through May 2027, with additional sculptures exhibited at the EDEN, House of Art at 645 Fifth Avenue.
Other projects from Thomas, Emily, and Mark include the repositioning of the historic Terminal Warehouse, The Greenwich, a slender supertall tower in Manhattan’s financial district, and the upcoming 1401 Brickell by Santander in Miami, which boasts a unique lattice exoskeleton.
